Senior Transportation Planner

Halcrow Consulting Inc. is a global multi-disciplinary consultancy, with a formidable international reputation in the field of transportation planning. We provide advice to public and private-sector clients, offering services ranging from policy formation and strategic planning, through to implementation, operation and performance monitoring, traffic and pedestrian modelling.
In our Canadian offices, our services have traditionally focussed on investment grade demand and revenue forecasting, transportation planning and evaluation, travel demand modelling and forecasting, traffic operations and micro-simulation. We have extensive traffic engineering expertise related to transit operations and ridership forecasts. Latterly, we have expanded our local capability in the areas of land use planning, master planning, and sustainability, joining forces with our staff in offices throughout North America and worldwide, and growing our local skills and experience in these areas. We offer a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled professionals, specializing in urban planning, urban design, transport planning, engineering and forecasting with a commitment to sustainable outcomes.

Key Objectives

The role involves contributing to the growth of our transportation planning business and further developing our local team in Vancouver.

 

The preferred candidate(s) will contribute to the development of Halcrow's consulting business in Canada, and will support business development in North America. Some travel in North America is likely to be required. In addition, travel to our global offices on selected assignments is possible.

Key Responsibilities

The position involves:

1. Management of travel demand forecasting projects, using transport modeling software.

2. Use of models to determine the effects of infrastructure (road and transit) projects, transportation demand management (TDM) initiatives and land use changes.

3. Development of computer applications to support transportation models, transportation and land use databases and GIS.

4. Calibration and validation of new transportation models.

5. Leading on the design of travel surveys including, database/GIS analysis and information system development.

6. Responsibility for validating and processing data, analyzing the data and preparing reports summarizing the results and findings.

7. Involvement in traffic engineering and planning using micro-simulation and/or mesoscopic packages (such as Vissim, Aimsun, Paramics, Transmodeler, Dynameq)

8. Management of project and business development budgets.

9. Mentoring, training and co-ordination of more junior staff in respect of travel demand forecasting and use of transport modeling software.

10. Development of client relationships and new leads, bid preparation, and business development. Preparation of written and graphic material for reports and presentations.

11. Development of strong working relationships with the other business groups in North America.

12. Management and mentoring of staff in marketing and business development roles.



Job Requirements

The preferred candidate(s) will be fully conversant with EMME, and experienced in the management of large scale travel demand studies, including forecasting and transportation model development. Proven report writing skills, and experience of managing, training and mentoring junior staff are essential requirements.

Familiarity with other macroscopic modeling packages (such as TransCAD, CUBE) is an asset, as is experience of micro-simulation packages.

 

The successful applicant(s) should have a minimum of 8 years experience, including project management and business development. The position and package will be commensurate with the experience of the qualifying candidate(s).
