Geomatics Manager

The Geomatics group within Hatfield Consultants provides services to internal project teams and projects, in addition to bidding on external geomatics opportunities, including federal and provincial government agencies, private sector clients (both domestic and international), the Canadian and European Space Agencies, and international development agencies. The Geomatics Manager will be responsible for managing a group of technical experts in the areas of image processing, GIS, ACAD, and web application development. The Geomatics Specialist will also be responsible for technical project management and contributions to business development in support of corporate growth objectives.

Reports to: Geomatics Director (a partner within HCP)
Duties and Responsibilities:

1. As Manager of the Geomatics group, take responsibility for:
1. Supervision of technical work and staff.
2. Resource allocation and distribution.
3. Day-to-day project management and project execution.
4. Budgeting and project administration.
5. Monthly reporting to the Management Group and the Geomatics Director.
6. Client contact and communications.
2. Lead business development activities within the Geomatics Group, including:
1. Project conceptualization.
2. Proposal writing.
3. Marketing.
3. Take a lead technical and QA/QC role in geomatics projects, including:
1. GIS and database data analysis.
2. Intermediate to advanced spatial analysis.
3. Remote sensing data acquisition and pre-processing.
4. Remote sensing analysis, including image classification.
5. Integration of remote sensing imagery into GIS projects.
6. Visualization of results, including 3D visualization, creation and distribution of Google Earth/Maps applications.
7. Creation of graphical outputs and cartography.
8. Specific skills in hydrographic/hydrological GIS data management would be beneficial.
4. Competencies:
1. Have demonstrated management skills, including managing technical and administrative staff.
2. Have a high degree of technical competency in one or more of the following areas:
1. The effective use and operation of PCI Geomatica 10.x, or equivalent.
2. Experience with both optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing data essential.
3. GIS, 3D visualization, database skills, including the effective use and operation of ArcGIS 9.x suite of tools, including Desktop, Workstation, ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server and related products.
4. AUTOCAD and the conversion of engineering drawings into a GIS format
3. Research and analytical skills (scientific literature research, geomatics data acquisition, compilation and analysis).
4. Problem solving skills (analyze a case or situation and recommend solutions).
5. Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written (technical or scientific writing).
6. Inter-personal skills - managing staff, interacting with senior company management, and developing partnerships/networks with partner organizations and stakeholders.
7. Intermediate to advanced computer skills (MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc).
5. Education and/or Experience:
1. Must have a M.Sc. or higher degree in geographical sciences, or related subject.
2. 5 - 10 years experience or combination of experience/education.
3. Have experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork; and an ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations.
4. Have appropriate Health and Safety certification and a current Drivers License.
5. GIS application development, a positive.
6. International travel and work experience preferable.
7. Experience participating in and delivering training courses would also be beneficial.
6. Ensure compliance of Geomatic Group members with Hatfield's Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols.
7. Ensure compliance of Geomatic Group members with Hatfield's Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.
