Junior GIS Technologist (Permanent Full-time)

The Opportunity

  • Provide GIS users and customers with technical expertise and support in response to GIS information queries and mapping requests for corporate needs, special projects, and public requests
  • Work with user groups to develop standard maps, templates and analytical tools
  • Perform GIS system analysis, programming, maintenance, operational support and troubleshooting.
  • Respond to ad-hoc GIS requests such as data extraction, spatial analysis and mapping
  • Implement and maintain GIS data standards for both internally developed and externally sourced digital GIS and mapping information
  • Work with internal users, departments and external parties to ensure spatial and mapping data provided to or used by the Town meet the Town’s GIS data standards and are compatible with the Town’s applications and databases that use GIS data
  • Work with the GIS team to identify, document and review business processes related to GIS to enable creation of workflows and models to automate business processes and improve operational efficiencies
  • Contribute to the development of business applications, information systems, integrations between enterprise applications that support the Town’s enterprise architecture protocols and standards
  • Ensure confidentiality and accuracy of the Town’s GIS data
  • Help advance the use of GIS at the Town
  • Assist IT staff in maintenance, support and installation of computer hardware and software as required
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

The Ideal Candidate
Candidates for this position will have the following training, education and experience or equivalent:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS/Geomatics
  • Minimum 2 years of related work experience with GIS tools and technologies
  • Demonstrated work experience with ESRI GIS software products
  • Demonstrated work experience with the following: ArcMap, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Mobile, 3D Analyst, ArcSDE, Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, Python, Geocortex, Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft SQL, Oracle SQL, and AutoCAD
  • Macro / C / C++ / Visual Basic programming skills would be an asset
  • Understanding of relational databases would be an asset
  • Solid understanding of cartographic design, map projections, horizontal and vertical datum, and complementary technologies such as remote sensing and GPS
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledgeable of current GIS principles, methodologies and practices for data management and governance of data spatial data structures and geodatabases
  • Ability to manage several concurrent projects and work efficiently under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, troubleshooting skills and communication skills
