Planner II

You are an Urban Planner who can do what most of us imagine Urban Planners doing ...working with stakeholders to set land use policy that provides direction for how future development takes place.

 

This position will focus on setting the policy for re-development of specific geographic areas, especially focussed on LRT station areas and transit corridors.This could involve coordinating a plan that will revitalize an older business area or providing direction on the scale, mix of land uses, and design of transit oriented development. You will have a hands-on role in how the Edmonton's communities look and function.  These position will require you to use your entire set of skills, drafting public policy, recommending land use/zoning changes, conducting consultation with the public and community stakeholders, and acting as a resource expert on planning and land use. Some of the specific duties include: 

  • Manage redevelopment planning projects
  • Determine and develop effective tools to implement plans including zoning and infrastructure upgrades
  • Collaborate with City departments, other agencies, landowners and communities to achieve integrated solutions
  • Prepare and deliver presentations, writing articles and reports for City Council, the administration, and the public
  • Provide professional planning advice to the public, City Council, and other members of the City administration
  • Hire and manage consultants as required.
Qualifications

:

  • Master's degree (preferred), a Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, or a degree related to the functions of the position 
  • 4 years of progressively responsible planning experience
  • Demonstrated ability design, conduct, and analyze land use studies
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and effectively present planning policy
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, as well as applicable legislation and regulatory requirements in Alberta
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently perform advance/complex level planning duties, take initiative and provide lead hand supervision
  • Significant knowledge of the principles, policies, and/or practices related to socio-economic, demographic, and land us analysis, transit-oriented development, intensification, urban design and leading edge public involvement strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills for a broad range of audiences
  • Good customer service, teamwork, organizational and project management skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Strong working knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs, Gmail
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) or membership in the Member Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) is desirable
