Summary
The Niagara Region has a 6 month temporary, full-time paid GIS Internship position with the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department.
This position assists with a number of projects related to Transportation Operations.
This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates of a GIS program to gain valuable work experience.
Position Details: Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday &ndash Friday 8:30am &ndash 4:30pm.
Location: Based at the Niagara Region's Headquarters Building (near Brock University), 2201 St. David's Road, Thorold, ON. Hourly Rate: $20.56 Job Description The GIS Intern supporting Transportation Operations works closely with the Transportation Operations Technician and Transportation Operations Technologist in the implementation of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and the existing Regional Salt Management Plan.
The Intern assists with GIS data gathering/handling, including the collection, creation, storage, analysis and management of spatial and attribute data.
Although the majority of the work in this position is office-based, there may be some data-collection field work involved.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Completion of an Ontario high school diploma (OSSD, SSGD, SSHGD, GED or provincial/national high school equivalency)
- Must have successfully completed a GIS or Geography post-secondary degree/diploma program within the last 12 months (or will successfully complete prior to starting this position)
- Must be able to start full-time work no later than December 1, 2015
- Knowledge and experience working with GIS software, preferably ArcGIS
Other Competencies or Skills
- Experience with map production
- Experience with data collection methods
- Experience/education related to Transportation operations
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and other similar technical documents
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure
- Strong communication skills - written and oral
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong computer skills &ndash Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and others
- Excellent analytical skills
- A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle to travel to various work sites would be an asset, but is not required

- Must provide proof of successful completion of high school
- Must provide proof of graduation from a GIS field of study within the last 12 months (or proof of successful completion of program requirements prior to starting this position)
