GIS Specialist - Visualization

The Planning and Building Department (Data & Visualization Studio) is seeking a 3D Visualization Designer with a strong background in GIS and visual experience to join our growing studio. Apply your 3D modelling to: Master Plans, Growth Forecasts, Development Applications, Community Plans/ Visioning Projects, Streetscape and Urban Designs. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree or Diploma in Urban Planning/Urban Design, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Geomatics or related field is required
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant work experience
  • Membership in professional associations such as: Geographic Information Manager (GIM)- AOLS, or Geographic Information Systems Professional GISP, is preferred
  • Must have a strong design sense and the ability to work to complete a project as part of a team, and to manage all aspects of the visualization pipeline – inclusive of 3D modeling, lighting, texturing, rendering and post production as a sole renderer
  • Proven experience with graphic design
  • Demonstrated ability to be versatile in the development of graphics and a wide range of styles
  • Proven ability to communicate and present information to the public using 3D visualization as a means of communication
  • Experience providing continuous research and analysis; and to be in a position to make informed decisions or responses as they relate to focused areas of activity
  • Requires strong decision making skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues independently as well as within a team setting
  • Must have a solid foundation and experience with ESRI ArcGIS Desktop (preferably ArcGIS Pro), ArcGIS 3D Analyst / ArcScene, as well as Adobe Suite (PS, AI, & ID)
  • Experience using City Engine, Trimble Sketchup, 3D finishing tools such as LuminRT, Blender or equivalent, and Video Editing Software (Adobe PRE & AE) are preferred
  • Ability to learn and absorb new computer skills and related discipline competencies in a progressive and rapidly changing environment
  • Must have strong skills in facilitation and an ability to motivate and lead projects
  • Requires high level of professional courtesy and ability to develop effective business relationships
  • Ability to attend various City sites when required     

 

DUTIES:

 

Under the direction of the Manager, Information Planning, you will work closely with the Urban Design Team with opportunities to help shape the City. The work produced in this positon will be seen in: social media, 3D web scenes, design charrettes, council presentations, and will form the basis of community engagement.

  •  Primary responsibility for the production of small, medium and large scale renderings, animations, solar studies and high quality presentation visuals/materials
  • Contribute to the development of fundamental GIS data sets and to be the primary contact with external data providers (planning consultants) for developmental strategies
  • Develop, document and maintain current maintenance process documentation for all areas relating to visualization
  • Perform 3D calculations and analysis (Line of sight analysis, Visual and non-visual impact assessments, Skyline analysis, View corridors, Shadow volume, Solar potential)
  • Develop final products including: digital visuals , fly/walk/drive through scenarios, audio + video media, 3D web scenes, 3D printing of proposed designs
  • Liaise with other sections, departments, consultants, the public and other outside agencies to provide or collect information that furthers the realism of the models such as: urban street tree canopy, street lighting, transit assets, street furniture
  • Assist in the procurement of a photo realistic City 3D landscape model
  • Develop or acquire a 3D reference library
  • Develop a 3D portfolio for new and existing clients
  • Combine augmented reality (e.g. Microsoft Hololense) and 3D modelling for public engagement as this technology matures
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
